Universal University - How the University for Creative Industries lives and works online

More than a month ago, Universal University switched completely to distance learning for the first time in 17 years: Now 87% of all university classes take place online, discussions in Zoom, workshops in Miro. Each of the eight schools experiences distant experiences in different ways: it all depends on the respective industry, many of which, like cinema or fashion, have never only lived in the digital world. Sonya Smyslova talks about the challenges facing the university team, curators and teachers, and the experience of overcoming them.

The Moscow Music School and the MARCH Architectural School are launching online intensive courses for the first time that would have been hard to imagine without the personal presence of the students in the classroom. The music school will introduce students to Ableton Live, teach the basics of songwriting and Sound design from far. The March course participants will deal with the reconstruction of buildings without visiting them.

By the way, Universal University and many of its member schools have their birthday in April, which is why parties with students and teachers are also held at Zoom. The lion’s share of our spring days with open doors fell during the quarantine: I have to say that thanks to online broadcasts, the audience has increased, since now those who are not in Moscow could take part in the event. For example, 10 countries took part in the Moscow School of Cinema open day, not to mention cities and regions. Almost 300 questions came during the event – In a room with a microphone moving from one to the other, this would take several hours.

In general, our university is very lucky: we are taught by creative people who can build relationships with students both live and online. The curator of the “Practical Film Criticism” program at the Moscow School of Cinemas jokingly threatened the students that he would not leave until everyone showed them their dogs and cats. The students, in turn, place their teacher in the background in zoom – so that they show their love and respect.

By the way, pets are not only shown in the classroom. The university team had a channel in Slack to share hacks of distance work, but on the very first day, the channel was filled with photos of their favorite animals, discussing how the dogs are happy about the owners who stayed at home and how outraged the cats are about this very thing. Then there were photos in masks, recipes for the quarantine menu, and much more.

By the way, pupils from the Moscow Film School predicted the outbreak of a pandemic two years before the quarantine. In history, a man and a girl who do not know each other learn to live together in isolation during the epidemic. I advise you to watch, such films are perceived very differently today.

At all Universal University schools, students learned real industry information, and the quarantine issue was beginning to turn into project tasks.

Students of the School of Education are redesigning universities, dealing with the personalization of education. Motion design students from Scream School made graphics for the Kohl music video “Dancing at Home (Good Mood Edition)”. The British have launched a social mob #britankaathome Flash Mob on a creative approach to self-isolation and are planning to do an online or offline exhibition of the best works by students, according to the results. Young people who also study online in ArtsCool’s British creative programs create “quarantine sketches”.

But children are children: when the ArtsCool classes were just going online, a group stayed up in the air to chat after class, and as soon as the teacher went out, one of the children got the rights of the chat host. The boys understood this and when the students of the next lesson started to zoom in, the school children removed them from the call and then removed the teacher along with the course coordinator completely. After the fifth week of quarantine, the usual life of the university seemed to have returned, but in a completely different form and in a completely different state. There aren’t enough students moving from audience to audience, there isn’t enough feeling to work with your hands (but here students can get out by creating home studios as they can), and there’s not enough communication with Colleagues. But then There were interesting statistics about classroom engagement, new ideas for rebuilding programs for the next academic year, and many new product hypotheses inside the university.

New forms of interaction have also emerged. For example, staff at the resource center, such as a sewing and jewelry workshop, a darkroom, a ceramic workshop, a photo studio, and a prototyping workshop, started to conduct online consultations and help students learn complex skills at home. This enables the students to discuss technical problems and project ideas with their colleagues for implementation after they have finished.

We miss live learning a lot, but we try to support the creative process and motivate our students and teachers until we can finally return to our favorite classes.

“The takers” – focused on maximizing their own benefits in a relationship. The interests of others do not bother them.

Finally, there is also “Givers” – these people are focused on selfless help to others. Their focus is relationships.

Which of these strategies is more winning? Based on the research data, the following can be said. In the early stages, the takers are the most successful, while the givers are the outsiders.

As you move up, the picture changes to the opposite. There are almost no “takers” at the heights of success. But among those who have achieved outstanding results, there are unexpectedly many “giving”. The “exchangers” show stable average results at all levels.

People who are focused on their own benefit rarely reach the top. The reasons for this are obvious. A systematic disregard for the interests of others alienates those around them and increases hostility. In other words, within the framework of this strategy, each subsequent step repels friends and multiplies enemies. As a result, sooner or later, a person remains alone. It’s good if by that time he manages to reach the top.

But even so, success often looks like this: you are sitting in a tree, under which a pack of hungry wolves has gathered.

Another strategy of greatest interest is “give”. According to research conducted, most selfless and selfless altruists who are concerned about the welfare of others and are willing to help them to the detriment of their own interests are losers, which seems quite natural. On the other hand, it is the “givers” who achieve the greatest successes.

Why? Is this a game of chance, or is there some factor that distinguishes successful givers from unsuccessful ones? Such a factor really exists. And this is your environment. Both are equally trying to help everyone and do not expect immediate rewards. Both those and others in response receive the sympathy and approval of others. Some of them seek to provide a reciprocal service – they are “exchangers”. Some take advantage of the value they receive without considering it necessary to give something in return – these are the “takers.”

The difference between losers and winners is what happens next.

The loser continues to help everyone equally. And here everything depends on the case – how many “takers” will be in his environment. If not enough, he will survive. If there is a lot, it will quickly lose all resources and opportunities for growth. The winner, on the other hand, knows how to identify the “takers” and remove them from his circle, so a network is gradually formed around him, which together brings him more than he put into its formation. From some point on, it becomes a key success factor. And the sooner he learns to do this, the higher his chances of achieving outstanding results.
