Gautam Gambhir reveals what Shahrukh Khan told while handing him KKR Captaincy

Star lineup, prolific captain and a charismatic boss – Kolkata Knight Riders had everything to bring the inaugural Trophy of the IPL. Along with Sourav Ganguly, KKR had multiple match winners like Chris Gayle, Ricky Ponting and Brendon McCullum. Keeping all these factors in mind, the Kolkata franchise was one of the strongest teams in the IPL 2008. However, KKR failed to live up to the expectations and this was possible when Gautam Gambhir got the captaincy.

In IPL 2011, the franchise bought Gautam Gambhir as their captain. After that, KKR introduced many veterans like Yusuf Pathan, Jack Kallis and Brett Lee to make their team stronger. In no time, their performance proved to be on top as the franchise won their first IPL trophy by defeating CSK in the final of IPL 2012.

Nine years after being given the responsibility of captaining KKR, Gambhir revealed what the team’s co-owner Shahrukh Khan had told him before the fourth season of the IPL in 2011.

Gambhir said in the Star Sports show ‘Cricket Connected’, “This is your team, build it or break it, I will not interfere. I have promised him only one thing, I do not know where it is going to be But by the time I leave, whether it is three years or six years old, this franchise will be in a much better position. “Gambhir added Star Sports’ Cricket Connect.”

Gambhir lived up to his promise as he won two IPL titles in 2012 and 2014. KKR is the third most successful franchise in the history of IPL, having won two titles so far. Gambhir’s aggressive captaincy and batting as well as the influx of match winners like Sunil Narine, Andre Russell and Kuldeep Yadav took KKR to new heights.

Gambhir partnered with KKR when the franchise went through another overall before IPL 2018. The left-handed batsman was replaced by India’s wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik, under which the team finished third in IPL 2018 but failed to qualify for the playoffs in 2019.

In the year 2018, Gambhir left KKR and after this Dinesh Karthik was made the next captain. In such a situation, KKR failed to make it to the playoffs.
